In alignment with the Year of Sustainability, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), alongside The National Aquarium (TNA) and Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center (YSWRRC), recently orchestrated a momentous event: the release of 214 rehabilitated turtles back into their natural habitats at Jumeirah Saadiyat Island's beach.

The collaborative effort saw TNA overseeing the rehabilitation of 200 turtles, while YSWRRC attended to a group of 14 hawksbill turtles. The release took place on June 6, 2024, in the presence of notable figures including Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, representatives from The National Aquarium, and other dignitaries.

Two days later, on June 8, 2024, a public release event was held at Saadiyat Rotana Resort and Villas, involving engaging activities for attendees.

This initiative marks the culmination of EAD's rescue and rehabilitation program, established through partnerships with TNA since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2020, resulting in the rescue of 1,067 turtles. Additionally, an MoU with YSWRRC in 2023 facilitated the rescue of 23 turtles.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri expressed her excitement, highlighting the success of the rescue and rehabilitation efforts, emphasizing the importance of preserving marine species for future generations.

Fouad Mashal, President and Vice Chairman of Al Barakah Holding, lauded the milestone achieved by TNA, with the release of the 1,000th turtle, underscoring the project's global significance.

Thomas Kaferle, General Manager of SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, echoed the sentiment of pride in the partnership with EAD, emphasizing the center's commitment to marine research, rescue, and rehabilitation.

EAD's extensive research and conservation efforts since 1999 have contributed to maintaining a stable population of marine turtles in Abu Dhabi waters. With four main species frequenting the area, including green turtles and hawksbills, EAD's vigilant monitoring aims to safeguard these vulnerable creatures.

The rescue and rehabilitation process addresses various challenges faced by turtles, including cold stunning, which can render them immobile and vulnerable. EAD's dedication to rescuing, nurturing, and releasing these turtles back into their natural habitats underscores their commitment to marine conservation and sustainability.
