The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has officially launched a new program called Energy Efficiency Accelerators in the Industrial Sector. This initiative is designed to help 100 industrial facilities in Abu Dhabi use energy and water more efficiently, reduce costs, and support the UAE’s goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

This new program is part of the Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy 2030. Its main aim is to help factories run better and more efficiently. Through this initiative, companies will receive professional advice and technical evaluations that identify ways to reduce costs and lower environmental impact—all without requiring extra investment from the facilities themselves.

Strategic Goals of the Initiative

His Excellency Engineer Ahmed Al Falasi, Executive Director of the Energy Efficiency Sector at DoE, explained that the initiative is a major step towards creating sustainable industrial operations in Abu Dhabi.

He said: "The Energy Efficiency Accelerators in the Industrial Sector is more than just a technical assessment. It is a strategic tool that guides industries toward sustainability. We help industrial facilities find smart ways to improve energy efficiency, reduce production costs, and make equipment work better. This also increases competitiveness and lowers environmental impact."

The program is aimed at addressing both economic and environmental challenges. Efficient use of energy and water is now essential, and this initiative provides industries with the tools to achieve higher performance, lower emissions, and better competitive advantage in the market.

How the Program Works

The initiative offers industrial facilities a complete assessment of energy and water usage. Participants will receive:

  • A full analysis of consumption patterns

  • Special technical recommendations

  • Guidance for creating a roadmap to improve efficiency

All data collected during the assessments will remain strictly confidential, ensuring that companies can participate without concerns about sharing sensitive information.

Focus on Major Industrial Sectors

The program focuses on industries that consume the most energy and water, including:

  • Construction materials

  • Food and beverages

  • Metals

  • Paper

  • Rubber and plastics

  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industries

These sectors account for a large share of energy and water consumption in Abu Dhabi’s non-oil industries. For example, the metals industry alone uses over 51% of electricity and 26% of water annually in the non-oil sector. By targeting these key industries, the initiative can achieve meaningful reductions in energy use and environmental impact.

Assessment Levels

The program evaluates facilities in three stages:

  1. Level 1 – Initial On-Site Visits: Engineers visit the facility to understand how energy and water are being used.

  2. Level 2 – Detailed Assessment: A deeper evaluation identifies inefficiencies and areas where performance can be improved.

  3. Level 3 – Advanced Analysis: The most thorough assessment, providing a detailed plan for improvements and energy-saving opportunities.

By using this step-by-step approach, facilities can pinpoint specific areas to save energy, reduce costs, and improve overall efficiency.

Current Progress

The DoE has already completed assessments for 12 industrial facilities, while work is ongoing at more than 14 other sites. The goal is to complete assessments for around 50 facilities by the end of 2025, with the remaining facilities to be evaluated in 2026.

This structured approach ensures that industries receive careful attention and guidance, giving them the opportunity to become leaders in energy efficiency within the UAE and internationally.

Benefits for Industrial Facilities

The program brings many benefits to participating facilities:

  • Reduced operational costs: By using energy and water efficiently, factories can lower their monthly expenses.

  • Improved equipment performance: Efficient energy use helps machinery work better and last longer.

  • Lower environmental impact: Reduced emissions and water use support Abu Dhabi’s sustainability goals.

  • Enhanced competitiveness: Companies can become more competitive locally and globally.

  • Support for future expansion: Efficient operations make it easier for facilities to grow sustainably.

Engineer Ahmed Al Falasi emphasized that the program is not just a technical assessment, but a strategic tool that enables industries to become key partners in achieving national climate and sustainability goals.

Why Energy Efficiency is Important

The world is increasingly focused on reducing emissions and conserving resources. Abu Dhabi’s industrial sector is no exception. By using energy and water more efficiently, industries can:

  • Cut unnecessary costs

  • Protect the environment

  • Maintain competitiveness in global markets

The initiative comes at a time when smart consumption of energy and water is critical. Factories that adopt these practices not only save money but also contribute to the UAE’s larger Net Zero 2050 objectives.

Through the Energy Efficiency Accelerators, Abu Dhabi aims to create a model for industrial sustainability and economic competitiveness. Participating facilities will serve as examples for other industries in the UAE and around the world.

The program is part of a long-term vision where industrial operations are efficient, sustainable, and profitable. It also reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to combining economic growth with environmental responsibility.

With this initiative, the DoE is showing that energy efficiency and sustainability can go hand in hand with industrial progress, creating a brighter future for both businesses and the environment.

The Energy Efficiency Accelerators in the Industrial Sector initiative is a pioneering program by Abu Dhabi’s Department of Energy. It helps industrial facilities save energy and water, reduce costs, and improve performance. Through detailed technical assessments, guidance, and support, the program aims to strengthen sustainability, lower emissions, and enhance competitiveness. With 100 facilities targeted, this initiative will play a crucial role in achieving UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals, setting a benchmark for industrial efficiency in the region.
