On Thursday, Arshad Nadeem achieved a historic milestone for Pakistan by winning the Olympic men’s javelin title in Paris, marking the country's first individual gold medal at the Summer Games. The 27-year-old athlete set an Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters, outshining competitors from around the world. India’s Neeraj Chopra, the defending champion, took the silver with a throw of 89.45 meters, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters secured the bronze with a throw of 88.54 meters.
Nadeem, who previously finished fifth in the Tokyo Olympics and earned silver at last year’s world championships, expressed immense joy after his victory. "When I threw the javelin, I felt it leave my hand and knew it could be an Olympic record," Nadeem remarked.

However, the celebration of this historic achievement has been marred by controversy. A video featuring Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif celebrating Nadeem's victory has sparked significant backlash on social media. In the video, Sharif is seen jubilantly raising his hands as Nadeem clinched the gold. A man next to the Prime Minister is heard praising him, saying, "Bahot mubarak ho sir, Pakistan Zindabad. Aapka vision hai sir, aapne isse mauka diya" (Many congratulations sir, Pakistan Zindabad. It's your vision. You gave him the chance).
This video has led to criticism from many social media users, who accuse Sharif of "petty appropriation" and "graceless opportunism." Some have suggested that the Prime Minister was merely reacting to a highlight reel rather than live coverage. Comments on social media have been harsh, with users describing the video as the "MOST hideous" example of opportunistic behavior and criticizing the Prime Minister’s actions as "clownery" and "shamelessness."
Despite the controversy surrounding his celebration, Arshad Nadeem's win is a proud moment for Pakistan. His achievement represents a significant step in the country’s sports history, and his record-setting performance has been celebrated as a testament to his dedication and skill in javelin throwing.
