Leh (Ladakh), November 17, 2025 — An early morning tremor startled residents of Leh on Sunday after a mild earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck the Union Territory of Ladakh. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the seismic activity, noting that the quake occurred at 03:15 am IST at a shallow depth of 10 km, an intensity that is often felt across nearby areas.
According to the official NCS report, the epicenter was located at latitude 36.64°N and longitude 75.29°E, placing it within the seismically active Himalayan region. The agency shared the details on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“EQ of M: 3.7, On: 17/11/2025 03:15:33 IST… Depth: 10 Km, Location: Leh, Ladakh.”
While the quake was mild, several residents reported feeling light shaking, especially in multi-story buildings. The tremor occurred at a time when most people were asleep, adding to the suddenness and momentary concern. Local authorities later clarified that there were no reports of damage, injuries, or disruptions to essential services.
Ladakh, being part of the Himalayan seismic belt, experiences frequent low to moderate intensity earthquakes due to ongoing tectonic movement between the Indian and Eurasian plates. Experts note that shallow earthquakes—even with moderate magnitudes—can be felt strongly because they occur closer to the earth’s surface.
Though the magnitude was not severe, the event serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Ladakh has witnessed multiple small quakes this year, prompting renewed discussions about disaster preparedness, structural safety, and awareness among local communities—especially in winter, when temperatures drop drastically and emergency response becomes more challenging.
The NCS and local administration are closely monitoring the situation for any potential aftershocks. Residents have been urged to remain cautious but not panic, as minor tremors are common in the region. Safety advisories highlighting steps to follow during and after earthquakes are expected to be issued shortly.
As the Himalayan region continues to experience tectonic shifts, experts emphasize the need for updated building codes, emergency training, and public awareness. Even mild earthquakes like this one can reveal gaps in preparedness and highlight the importance of community readiness.
For now, Leh has returned to normalcy, with Sunday’s tremor acting as a gentle but important reminder that the picturesque mountain town lies in one of the world’s most dynamic seismic zones.
