Detroit Police Chief James White explained that the boy’s mother had just returned home from work and placed her firearm on a dresser. In an unfortunate turn of events, the child managed to get hold of the unsecured gun and accidentally fired it. The bullet grazed his face, leaving him critically injured. Despite the severity of the situation, the boy is expected to survive, though his condition remained critical as of Friday night.
White stressed the importance of gun safety, particularly around young children, saying, "A three-year-old toddler roaming around, they see you put the gun down, they are probably going to pick it up, just like anything else." He also mentioned that while there was a locked gun box in the home, it was not used at the time of the incident. "It only takes seconds. You have to secure these weapons," White added, emphasizing how quickly such tragedies can unfold.
Police are now investigating whether the mother had a license for the firearm. Michigan’s gun storage law, which went into effect earlier this year, mandates that firearms be safely stored, especially in homes with children. Authorities are considering charging the mother with improper storage of a firearm.
Neighbors, like Lorenzo Hardy, expressed concern over the incident and the lasting impact it could have on the child. Hardy, who lives nearby, spoke of the trauma the boy will likely endure. "It’s really sad that a child gets to hold a gun; it's ridiculous," he said.
The shooting has reignited discussions about responsible gun ownership and the importance of securing firearms to prevent similar accidents. Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
