On August 25, Manette Baillie, a remarkable 102-year-old from Britain, achieved a new milestone by skydiving from 7,000 feet, setting a record as the oldest woman to perform such a feat. This adventurous birthday celebration followed a life filled with notable achievements and service.

Baillie, a former member of the Women's Royal Naval Service during World War II and widow of a paratrooper, took the leap with UK Parachuting Services Ltd. Her skydiving event was more than just a thrill-seeking endeavor; it served as a fundraiser for several causes close to her heart. The proceeds are earmarked for Benhall's village hall, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, and the East Anglian Air Ambulance—a service that played a crucial role in saving her son’s life after a diving accident in 1969. To date, her efforts have raised over £10,000 towards her £30,000 goal, inspiring generosity and community support.

After her exhilarating descent, Baillie shared her experience with BBC Radio, describing it as "a bit scary" but exhilarating. “I must admit I shut my eyes very firmly,” she confessed, noting the intensity of the jump. Despite the fear, she emphasized the importance of staying active and engaged. "I just want other people who are getting towards 80 and 90 not to give up anything. Just keep going. I've been so lucky to be fit and well that I've got to do something with it,” she said, reflecting on her own fortunate health.

This daring stunt was not Baillie's first encounter with high-speed thrills. For her 100th birthday, she set a record by driving a Ferrari around Silverstone at 130 mph. Her adventurous spirit was again highlighted when she recounted her Ferrari experience during an interview with Radio 4. “I really don't do fear. It’s no good. It’s 130 miles per hour, to begin with, before they pull the rip cords for the parachute, and then it's gently floating down,” she stated with characteristic boldness.

Baillie's decision to skydive was inspired by a friend's 85-year-old father who had completed a similar jump. "If an 85-year-old man can do it, so can I," she remarked, showcasing her indomitable spirit.

Her fearless nature has garnered praise from various quarters, including Prince William. In a note of commendation, he wrote, "Catherine and I hear you'll be marking your 102nd birthday with a parachute jump! Given your history of racing a Ferrari at 100, we're not surprised!"

Manette Baillie's latest adventure stands as a testament to her vibrant spirit and unyielding zest for life, setting an example for all to follow.
