Zelensky in France Secures Weapons, Air-Defence to Counter Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Paris on Monday to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities amid escalating Russian missile and drone strikes. The visit, part of a tour of Western allies, follows an energy deal sealed with Greece on Sunday and precedes Zelensky’s visit to Spain on Tuesday.

During his Paris meetings, Zelensky held talks with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace. Macron emphasized France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, stating that French expertise in the armaments industry would be “put at the service of the defence of Ukraine.” Paris plans to explore ways for Ukraine to acquire the advanced military systems needed to counter Russian aggression, with a focus on air-defence systems.

The visit began at Villacoublay air base near Paris, where both leaders reviewed France’s Rafale fighter jets and the SAMP-T surface-to-air missile system, developed jointly with Italy. The SAMP-T is capable of countering fighter jets, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles, with a new-generation, more powerful system expected by 2027.

France has already pledged additional Aster missiles for Ukraine, which can be fired from both the SAMP-T system and aircraft. Zelensky, in a video released Friday, described a “historic agreement” in preparation, promising the finalization of a major defence deal with France. Discussions also covered drone production, as Ukraine aims to deploy over 4.5 million drones this year for frontline attacks and defensive operations against Russian drones.

Zelensky and Macron also visited the Mont Valerien headquarters of a multinational force being organized by France and Britain. This force could be deployed in Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire, with 34 countries, including Ukraine, already pledging support.

This visit marks Zelensky’s ninth to France since Russia’s invasion in 2022 and comes as his government faces a corruption scandal involving Ukrainian energy firms. France’s Europe Minister Benjamin Haddad highlighted the need for vigilance while Ukraine continues its push for EU membership.

With tensions rising on the battlefield and the diplomatic front, Zelensky’s engagements in Paris aim to secure advanced weaponry, strengthen European support, and ensure Ukraine is better equipped to defend its sovereignty against continuing Russian aggression.
