The World Robot Competition – Mecha Fighting Series started on Sunday in Hangzhou, a city in East China's Zhejiang Province. This is the first-ever tournament where humanoid robots fight each other. Robots built by companies like Unitree Robotics showed off their skills during a livestreamed event. This competition is a chance for Chinese robotics companies to show how advanced their technology has become.
This event is historic because it’s the world’s first combat sports tournament that focuses only on humanoid robots. It shows how artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to be used in sports that involve fighting. All the fighting robots use technology developed in China.
The tournament has two parts: demonstration matches where robots show their moves, and real competitive matches where robots controlled by humans fight each other live in the arena.
Unitree Robotics, a leading company in making humanoid robots, helped organize the event. During the competition, robots performed boxing fights one-on-one and in teams, showing off their skills.
Four teams of human operators controlled the robots as they fought in a series of boxing matches. A marketing team member from Unitree Robotics said that the robots fight in a way that combines humans and machines working together. The robots used punches like straight punches and hook punches, kicks from the side, and even spinning kicks in the air. They also got back up after falling to the ground.
One of the robots in the competition, called Unitree G1, is 1.32 meters tall and weighs 35 kilograms. It has strong computing power and moves smoothly. It is designed to work in places where humans have trouble, thanks to its flexibility and quick movements, even though it’s small.
Experts say that robot battles like this test how well robots are built, how well they can move, and how smart their AI is when making decisions quickly. This competition will help improve robot technology and create more skilled people in China’s fast-growing robotics field.
Chinese robots have come a long way. They have already shown they can solve Rubik’s Cubes, help in medical work, run in marathons, and now fight in the boxing ring. A former AI research institute head said this boxing event is more than just a fight. It shows how much China has advanced in AI, robotics, and engineering.
Besides having strong batteries and tough materials, robots in combat need to move their whole bodies well and use their arms efficiently. Operators must control the robots remotely and change their strategies quickly during fights. These robots are judged not only on strength but also on how well they learn and adapt.
Before the boxing matches, the robots went through tests to check if they were ready to fight and to help organizers improve the rules. A coordinator said a robot must keep its balance well and move smoothly and accurately. The developers want to create lighter and smarter robots that could be useful in everyday life in the future.
Besides the event in Hangzhou, the first full-sized humanoid robot combat tournament is planned for December in Shenzhen, a city in South China’s Guangdong Province. A Shenzhen-based robotics company is organizing that event. They want to show the newest breakthroughs in AI and robotics through exciting robot fights, while also helping the robot industry grow and encouraging more people to use robot technology.
With more events like these, the robot fighting sports industry is growing fast and looks very promising. Many Chinese companies are working on the next generation of humanoid robots. These robots offer a new kind of entertainment powered by technology.
China’s humanoid robots are improving quickly thanks to rapid progress in “embodied intelligence,” which means robots can do more complex tasks with their bodies. They are starting to be used not just in factories but also in homes. The Chinese Institute of Electronics says China’s humanoid robot market could reach 870 billion yuan (about $120 billion) by 2030.
