A recent case from Bengaluru has brought attention to a common but often unnoticed health problem among women—silent or asymptomatic fibroids. A 30-year-old IT professional visited the hospital for a routine employment health check-up. She was fit, active, and visited the gym regularly. She had no pain, no heavy periods, and no discomfort. But the scan showed something completely unexpected. She had multiple fibroids that had grown as large as an 8-month pregnant uterus.
Doctors were surprised because her strong abdominal muscles had been hiding the large growth. According to gynaecologist Dr. Madhuri Vidyashankar P from Motherhood Hospital, this case shows how fibroids can grow quietly without giving any warning signs. She says that almost half of her patients have asymptomatic fibroids, meaning they experience no symptoms at all.
Fibroids are non-cancerous lumps that grow inside or outside the uterus. They are made of muscle and fibrous tissue. Many women develop them at some point in their lives. The size of fibroids can differ widely. Some are as small as a seed, while others grow big enough to change the shape of the uterus. Even though fibroids are common, many women do not notice them until they become large.
Some fibroids cause signs like heavy periods, pelvic pressure, bloating, frequent urination, or fertility problems. But many women ignore these mild symptoms, thinking they are normal. Studies show that women aged 35 to 39 and older have a higher chance of developing fibroids. According to medical research, undetected fibroids can become dangerous if they grow too large. They can press on the ureters, affect kidney function, cause repeated infections, or create problems during pregnancy.
Dr. Vidyashankar explains that she sees many cases where women have no idea that fibroids are growing inside them. The danger lies in how silent they can be. In the recent case, the woman showed no signs even though the fibroids had reached a size usually seen in the final months of pregnancy. Her active lifestyle and strong muscles likely helped hide the swelling.
Doctors warn that fibroids can grow for years without causing obvious discomfort. If they stay undetected, they may lead to pain, difficulty in passing urine, fertility challenges, or infections. This is why routine checkups and scans are important, especially for women who may not experience clear symptoms.
The case is a reminder that not every belly swelling is a baby bump. Sometimes, the body hides health issues that need proper medical attention. As silent fibroids become more common, doctors suggest regular monitoring and early diagnosis. This helps avoid the risks that come with large, untreated growths.
This incident highlights how important it is for women to listen to their bodies, even when there is no pain. Routine health checks can make a big difference in catching silent conditions before they become serious.
