A 37-year-old woman, Renee Nicole Good, was shot dead by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis on Wednesday, according to officials.

Good, a resident of the Twin Cities area, was shot a few blocks from her home. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the shooting occurred after officers were blocked while carrying out the operation.

What Happened During the ICE Operation

According to DHS, officers approached an SUV driven by Good and ordered her to exit the vehicle. Video footage shows officers attempting to open the driver’s side door before the vehicle briefly reversed and then moved forward. Multiple gunshots can be heard as the SUV crashed into a parked car.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said Good ignored repeated commands and attempted to run over an ICE officer, describing it as an effort to cause serious harm. The officer who fired the shots was struck by the vehicle and later treated at a hospital before being released.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin confirmed that the woman was shot during the confrontation. The FBI and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension have launched investigations into the incident.

Who Was Renee Nicole Good

Renee Nicole Good lived in Minneapolis with her partner and was the mother of a six-year-old child, according to her family.

Her mother, Donna Ganger, described her as “one of the kindest people” and said Good was extremely compassionate and caring. “She was loving, forgiving, and affectionate. She was an amazing human being,” Ganger told the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Good graduated from Old Dominion University in 2020 with a degree in English. She studied creative writing and received the university’s undergraduate poetry prize for her work titled “On Learning to Dissect Fetal Pigs.” University President Brian Hemphill called her death another sign of how fear and violence have become common in the country.

She was originally from Colorado Springs and enjoyed writing, watching movies, and creating art. Her social media profile described her as a poet, writer, wife, and mother living in Minneapolis.

Good was previously married to Timmy Ray Macklin Jr, who died in 2023 at the age of 36. The couple shared a child.

Official and Public Response

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he had viewed the video footage and urged the public not to believe misinformation surrounding the case. He stated that the incident is under active investigation and facts should be allowed to come forward.
