US Teen Arrested After Falsely Calling 911 to Avoid Date with Online Match

United States: Sumaya Thomas, an 18-year-old woman, has been arrested for allegedly making a false 911 call to avoid going on a date with a man she met on a dating app. According to reports from The Independent, Thomas told authorities that her ex-boyfriend, whom she claimed was abusive, was outside her residence and threatening her with violence. She further stated that he had sent threatening text messages indicating intentions to harm her physically.

The incident, which occurred on June 16, resulted in Thomas facing charges of making false reports, categorized as misdemeanors. Additionally, she falsely informed law enforcement that she was pregnant with her ex-boyfriend's child. Most of their interactions, she claimed, had occurred via Snapchat.

Upon arrival at the scene, police officers observed the man leaving the premises. He informed them that he had only recently started communicating with Thomas through a dating app, moving their conversations to text messages thereafter. The man cooperated with authorities by showing them the text and app messages, confirming they were sent to Thomas's phone number.

Subsequently, the man was detained for more than an hour due to the fabricated accusations. During a subsequent interview, Thomas admitted that she had concocted the false report because she had "cold feet" about meeting him and no longer wished to go through with the date.

"She stated she didn't think officers would assist her so she made up the call and events that she described," read the police complaint.

Thomas was arrested and subsequently released from Johnson County Jail in Iowa following the incident. The case underscores the serious consequences of making false emergency calls and misleading law enforcement, affecting both the accused and law enforcement resources.

This incident highlights the importance of truthful communication and the legal repercussions of falsifying emergency situations.
