US Vaccine Panel Drops COVID-19 Shot Recommendation

In a major shift, a vaccine advisory committee appointed by U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has declined to recommend COVID-19 vaccinations for any age group this autumn. Instead, the panel left the decision to individuals in consultation with healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses, or pharmacists.

FDA and CDC Diverge on Vaccine Recommendations

Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax, but limited them to adults aged 65 and older and younger people at high risk of severe illness.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory panel went further, not endorsing the shots even for seniors or other vulnerable groups. The committee also urged stronger disclosure of potential vaccine risks on patient information sheets, a move criticized by some health experts who say the vaccines are proven safe.

Impact on Public Health and Trust

Experts expressed concern that the decision could leave the public uncertain. Dr. Paul Offit of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia said the lack of recommendation might confuse individuals, even those at high risk. Dr. Sean O’Leary of the American Academy of Pediatrics warned the debate could fuel mistrust and harm child vaccination rates.

State and Insurance Responses

Some states have moved to guarantee access to vaccines despite the federal panel’s stance. America’s Health Insurance Plans, representing major insurers, confirmed they will continue covering COVID-19 vaccines through 2026.

Ongoing Threat and Expert Opinions

COVID-19 continues to pose significant health risks. CDC data shows 32,000–51,000 Americans died last autumn and winter, with over 250,000 hospitalizations. Seniors and unvaccinated young children remain most vulnerable.

The vaccines, updated annually like flu shots, remain the strongest protection against severe illness and death, though uptake is low: only 44% of seniors and 13% of children were up to date last year. Dr. Jesse Goodman, former FDA vaccine chief, noted the uncertainty may not drastically reduce access but could erode public trust.

The final decision on recommendations rests with CDC interim director Jim O’Neill, a Kennedy ally who recently replaced Susan Monarez. As the autumn vaccination season approaches, individuals are advised to consult their healthcare providers to make informed decisions about COVID-19 vaccination.
