The United Nations General Assembly approved a landmark resolution to establish a new advisory body dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI). This important step comes as governments across the world grow increasingly concerned about the rapid rise of AI and how it could affect democracy, human rights, and the daily lives of people everywhere.
The newly created body will be known as the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence. It will bring together 40 leading experts and scientists from different countries, who will serve for three years. Their main role will be to carefully study AI, provide fact-based reports, and offer clear advice on how nations can safely manage the opportunities and risks connected to this powerful technology.
Why the Panel is Needed
Countries believe that AI is no longer just a tool of the future – it is already changing how societies function. From schools and hospitals to workplaces and elections, AI is shaping decisions and influencing human behavior. While the technology offers benefits like faster medical research, improved transportation, and economic growth, it also raises serious worries. Experts warn that if AI is left unchecked, it could lead to job losses, privacy violations, unfair discrimination, and even threats to democracy itself.
To avoid these dangers, the UN resolution highlights the need for a shared global response. No single country can regulate AI alone because its impact crosses borders. For this reason, member states agreed that the UN should take the lead in building international cooperation.
What the Panel Will Do
The panel’s work will be both scientific and practical. Its experts will:
* Publish scientific assessments that explain both the benefits and risks of AI.
* Collect and study existing global research on AI impacts.
* Recommend how countries can develop fair rules for AI that protect people’s rights.
* Support the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which include reducing poverty, improving healthcare, and promoting equality worldwide.

Annual Global Dialogue on AI
In addition to the scientific panel, the resolution also sets up an annual global dialogue on AI governance. This event will gather governments, scientists, technology companies, and civil society groups to share best practices and lessons learned.
The first summit will be held in Geneva next year, where the world’s leaders will meet to discuss how AI can be managed responsibly. The gathering is expected to focus on building trust, encouraging innovation, and preventing misuse of the technology.
Key Voices Behind the Resolution
Costa Rican ambassador Maritza Chan Valverde, who led the discussions alongside Spain’s representative, explained the importance of the new initiative. She said:
“The development of artificial intelligence is advancing at a pace and scale that means it affects all states and countries across the globe. With this resolution, the United Nations reaffirms its central role in guaranteeing that AI will serve humanity.”
Her words reflect the concerns of many smaller and developing nations that do not have the resources to deal with AI alone. For them, the UN framework will ensure that global cooperation is fair and inclusive.
The Bigger Picture
This move marks one of the strongest global actions yet to manage artificial intelligence. It shows that governments are no longer treating AI only as a technological innovation but as a matter of international policy and human rights.
The resolution comes at a time when major countries and corporations are competing for dominance in AI research. By creating a neutral, scientific body, the UN aims to balance these interests and focus on how AI can be used for peace, equality, and sustainable growth.
The coming months will be critical, as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres begins the process of selecting the 40 experts who will serve on the new panel. Their findings and recommendations are expected to influence not just governments but also industries and communities worldwide.
Why This Matters for People Everywhere
For ordinary people, this decision may seem distant, but its effects will touch daily life. Rules on AI could affect:
* How social media platforms use personal data.
* How schools adopt digital learning tools.
* How hospitals apply AI in diagnosing diseases.
* How jobs and economies change with automation.
* How governments protect citizens’ rights online.
By setting up this global body, the United Nations is making sure that decisions about AI are not left only to private companies or a few powerful nations. Instead, it becomes a shared responsibility of the entire international community.
