Ukrainian sumo wrestler Aonishiki, whose real name is Danylo Yavhusishyn, made history by winning the Emperor’s Cup at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in Fukuoka, Japan, on Sunday. At just 21 years old, Aonishiki became the first Ukrainian to win an elite-level sumo tournament, defeating Mongolian yokozuna Hoshoryu in a thrilling final match.
Aonishiki’s victory has put him on the edge of promotion from the rank of sekiwake to ozeki, the sport’s second-highest rank. Despite this achievement, he said he is not yet thinking about his promotion, focusing instead on enjoying his first major tournament win. After his victory, he participated in the traditional sumo ritual of holding up a sea bream, a symbol of good luck, which he said was a new and exciting experience.
Born in Vinnytsia, Ukraine, Aonishiki started sumo wrestling at the age of seven and became the national champion by the age of 17. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he fled with his parents to Germany before moving to Japan in April 2022 to pursue his sumo career.
After winning the tournament, Aonishiki called his parents in Germany to share the news. He expressed his gratitude to them, saying, “It’s all thanks to you.” He mentioned that his mother was moved to tears, and although his father hid his emotions, he was also deeply affected. Friends and acquaintances from Ukraine have also reached out to congratulate him.
Aonishiki also expressed his joy at being able to repay his stablemaster for the support and training he has received. He enjoyed the celebrations after the tournament and is now focused on preparing for the challenges ahead.
This historic win marks a proud moment not only for Aonishiki but also for Ukraine, as he brings new recognition to the country in the world of sumo wrestling.
