UK Court: Indian-Origin 'Guru' Faces Millions in Sex Assault Lawsuit

Rajinder Kalia, an Indian-origin "guru" based in England, is currently embroiled in a legal battle at the High Court in London over allegations of sexual assault brought against him by former disciples. The 68-year-old is accused of leveraging his sermons, teachings, and purported miracles to exert undue influence over his followers' actions.

The trial, which commenced recently at the Royal Courts of Justice before Justice Martin Spencer, follows a previous legal ruling allowing the case to proceed to trial. Judge Deputy Master Richard Grimshaw highlighted the complexity of factual issues concerning the coercive control allegedly exercised by Kalia over his followers.

The claimants, all of Indian origin, allege that Kalia subjected them to "serious sexual assaults" over many years, often within the confines of the "priest’s room" at his temple in Coventry. They contend that Kalia abused his position as head priest of the Sidh Baba Balak Nath Ji Society of Coventry England, a registered charity, to perpetrate these acts.

In response, Kalia vehemently denies the allegations, describing them as false and part of a conspiracy to tarnish his reputation within the community. He maintains that the relationships were consensual and challenges the claims on multiple legal grounds.

Kalia's journey to prominence in the UK began in 1977 after a motorcycle accident that he believed was miraculously healed following a visit to Deotsidh in Himachal Pradesh, India. This experience deepened his faith in Hinduism, particularly in Baba Balak Nath, and inspired him to establish a temple dedicated to the deity in Coventry.

The trial is expected to continue for several weeks, with a judgment anticipated in the near future. Throughout the proceedings, both sides will present their arguments and evidence to determine the veracity of the allegations against Kalia and the impact on his religious community in the UK.
