The United Arab Emirates has temporarily suspended the issuance of new tourist and work visas for citizens from nine countries across Africa and Asia, according to a reports, which cited an internal immigration circular. The move signals a significant shift in the UAE’s immigration policy with wide-ranging economic, diplomatic, and humanitarian implications.

Countries Affected
The suspension applies to residents of:
Afghanistan
Libya
Yemen
Somalia
Lebanon
Bangladesh
Cameroon
Sudan
Uganda
As of 2026, citizens of these countries are barred from applying for new tourist visas and work permits. However, the ban does not extend to those who already hold valid UAE visas, who may continue to live and work in the country without disruption. Importantly, this is a visa issuance suspension, not a complete travel ban.
Possible Reasons Behind the Decision
While the UAE government has not issued an official explanation, several factors are believed to have influenced the decision:
National Security Concerns: Past bans were imposed to curb document fraud, identity theft, illegal migration, and risks linked to terrorism-related activities. This preventive measure aims to safeguard the UAE against potential threats.
Geopolitical Tensions: Immigration policies have historically reflected broader diplomatic positions. Bilateral frictions between the UAE and certain nations may have contributed to the current restrictions.
Public Health and Safety: COVID-19 protocols continue to shape visa reviews. The UAE remains cautious about health screenings, weak healthcare infrastructure in some regions, and the risk of emerging virus variants.
Broader Implications
The move highlights the UAE’s cautious stance on immigration in a region where it remains a major hub for tourism and expatriate workers. While the indefinite suspension raises concerns for prospective applicants, those already living in the Emirates face no changes to their residency or employment status.
