A major criminal trial has begun in Greece over the deadly train collision that killed 57 people, many of them students, in February 2023. The tragedy shocked the nation and exposed serious safety failures in the country’s railway system.
The crash took place in Tempe in northern Greece when a passenger train was mistakenly directed onto the wrong track. It collided head-on with an oncoming freight train, causing a massive fireball and trapping passengers inside destroyed rail cars.
A total of 36 defendants, including railway staff and transport officials, are facing serious charges related to endangering public safety. Those accused include station masters on duty that night, their supervisors, senior transport ministry officials, and former executives of Hellenic Train.
Investigations have revealed that the accident was not just due to human error. Faulty signal systems, poor maintenance, lack of staff, and delays in safety upgrades all contributed to the disaster.
Due to the large scale of the case, the trial is being held in a converted campus to accommodate hundreds of witnesses. Authorities expect the proceedings to last up to two years.
Security has been tightened around the court, with riot police deployed as hundreds of protesters gathered outside. Many victims’ families, dressed in black, attended the hearings demanding justice.
Relatives of the victims have expressed anger over the delay in accountability. They say that even after three years, no one has been jailed for the tragedy.
The disaster remains a highly emotional and political issue in Greece. It has triggered protests, strikes, and ongoing demands for accountability. Critics have accused the government of shifting blame only onto railway staff.
Meanwhile, memorials continue across the country. Outside parliament in Athens, the names of the victims are written in red, surrounded by candles and flowers.
Several other legal investigations, including a parliamentary probe into political responsibility, are still ongoing.
