Russia Responds After Trump Orders US to Resume Nuclear Testing

Moscow – Russia has called on the United States to clarify recent remarks by President Donald Trump regarding the potential resumption of nuclear testing, warning that such a move could provoke serious responses from other nations.

The statement came from Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova during a news briefing in Moscow on Friday. Her remarks followed Trump’s announcement last week that the US military would immediately restart the process for testing nuclear weapons, ending a 33-year moratorium on such activities.

Details remain unclear as to whether Trump’s directive refers to nuclear-explosive testing, which would fall under the National Nuclear Security Administration, or flight testing of nuclear-capable missiles. The lack of specificity has raised concerns among global leaders about the potential escalation of nuclear tensions.

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed top officials on Wednesday to prepare proposals for Russia to potentially conduct its own nuclear test should the United States move forward. Russia has not conducted a nuclear test since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, and both nations hold the world’s largest nuclear arsenals.

Experts warn that restarting nuclear testing could mark a significant shift in international security dynamics. Such actions may undermine longstanding arms control agreements, including the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and could trigger a new era of nuclear competition between the world’s superpowers.

“The implications of renewed nuclear testing are serious,” said a former arms control official. “It affects not just US-Russia relations but global stability. Every action in this area is closely watched by other nuclear and non-nuclear states alike.”

The announcement has already sparked concern in diplomatic circles, with multiple nations urging Washington to provide clarity on the scope and timeline of its nuclear testing plans. Analysts note that any US testing could set a precedent for other countries, potentially reigniting a global arms race.

While the Trump administration frames the move as strengthening national security, critics argue that the timing and lack of transparency could increase international tension. Russia’s swift response underscores the high stakes involved and the sensitivity surrounding nuclear weapons policy in the modern geopolitical environment.

As the situation unfolds, world leaders are closely monitoring both US and Russian actions, calling for measured steps to avoid escalation and maintain global nuclear stability.
