Australian authorities are currently investigating a tragic two-vehicle collision that claimed the lives of three female bus passengers in Queensland over the weekend. The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. local time on Sunday on the Bruce Highway near Gumlu, a coastal town in northern Queensland.
According to Queensland Police, the crash involved a four-wheel drive towing a caravan and a bus traveling in opposite directions. The collision resulted in severe damage, pushing the bus onto a nearby railway line. The Bruce Highway was temporarily closed in both directions at Gumlu following the crash but reopened to traffic later that night. Queensland Police Superintendent Graeme Paine addressed the media, stating that the investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the accident. He emphasized the complexity of the incident and highlighted the involvement of specialist crash investigators who are meticulously examining the scene and interviewing witnesses.
Emergency response teams from the Queensland Ambulance Service attended to a total of 35 patients at the crash site. Two critically injured patients were airlifted to Townsville Hospital, while two others were airlifted to Ayr Hospital. Additionally, four stable patients were transported by road to Ayr Hospital, and 24 patients with minor injuries declined hospitalization.
Gumlu, with a population of 124, is a remote area located approximately 1,223 kilometers north of Brisbane. The Bruce Highway serves as a vital link connecting numerous towns along Queensland's eastern coast. Whitsunday Mayor Ry Collins described the section of the highway near Gumlu as challenging, noting its narrowness and lack of shoulder space.
Authorities continue to urge caution on the roads and emphasize the ongoing investigation into the tragic incident.
