The city of Graz, Austria, is reeling from a horrific school shooting that occurred on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, leaving at least nine people dead. Graz Mayor Elke Kahr confirmed the grim toll, which includes the perpetrator of the attack. Reports indicate that seven of the deceased are students and one is an adult, though the exact breakdown of victims is still being clarified.
The tragic incident unfolded at the BORG Dreierschützengasse high school in Graz, Austria's second-largest city. Police received an emergency call around 10:00 AM local time, reporting gunshots within the school building. A major police operation was immediately launched, involving special forces and a helicopter, to secure the area and ensure the safety of students and staff.
Initial reports suggest the attacker opened fire in at least two classrooms before allegedly taking their own life. The suspect's body was reportedly found in a bathroom inside the school. While the motive behind this horrific act remains unclear, authorities have stated they believe the assailant acted alone, and there is no longer any immediate danger to the public.
Students and staff were swiftly evacuated from the school, with many being taken to a safe meeting point. Injured individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals, while some were cared for in the Helmut List Hall, which was temporarily converted into an emergency care facility. The incident has sent shockwaves across Austria, a nation with relatively strict gun laws, and has led to an outpouring of condolences from across Europe. This tragedy comes just days before the tenth anniversary of another deadly rampage in Graz in 2015, which claimed three lives, making this event particularly poignant for the community. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the tragedy and the identity of the perpetrator.
