Life in the Philippines' capital, Manila, came to a sudden stop on July 22, 2025. Heavy rains poured overnight, flooding many areas and forcing thousands of people to leave their homes. The rain was so strong that it filled streets and houses with water, making it very hard for people to move around.

What Happened During The Heavy Rains?

The strong rains started late at night and continued for hours. These rains made the Marikina River overflow. When the river overflowed, the water entered nearby villages and towns. People woke up to see water all around their houses, streets, and shops. Many residents had to quickly pack their important things and leave before the water rose further.

Schools And Offices Closed For Safety

Due to the dangerous situation, the government decided to close all schools and government offices in Metro Manila and the nearby provinces. This decision was taken to keep students, teachers, and workers safe from accidents or getting stuck in floods while travelling.

Two People Missing As Search Continues

Officials confirmed that at least two people are missing because of the floods. Search and rescue teams are working day and night to find them. The teams are using boats and special equipment to reach areas that are completely underwater.

Families Forced To Stay In Temporary Shelters

Thousands of families had to leave their homes because of the rising water. They have moved to temporary shelters set up by the government and local groups. These shelters provide food, water, sleeping mats, and basic medical help to the affected people.

One family shared how they had to leave their house at midnight because the water was entering their rooms. They said that even though they are safe now, they are worried about their home and belongings left behind in the flood.

People Seen Wading Through Flooded Streets

Many photos and videos have come out from the flooded areas. In one photo, people are seen wading through knee-deep water in Cainta town, east of Manila. Some were carrying their children on their shoulders to keep them safe from the dirty floodwater.

Another photo showed a woman taking a selfie while walking through the flooded streets in Manila. Even in such difficult times, some people tried to stay positive and brave.

Relief Efforts By The Government And Volunteers

The government has sent rescue teams, doctors, and volunteers to help the people affected by the floods. Trucks carrying food packets, clean drinking water, and medicines have been sent to the shelters. Volunteers are working with local officials to distribute these supplies.

Doctors are also visiting shelters to check if anyone is sick, as dirty floodwater can cause diseases like fever, diarrhoea, or skin infections.

Warnings Of More Rain In Coming Days

Weather experts have warned that more rain is likely to fall in the coming days. They have asked people living in low-lying areas and near rivers to remain careful. People have been told to listen to official announcements and be ready to leave their homes if the water rises again.

Why Is Manila Facing Such Floods Often?

Manila and many other parts of the Philippines face heavy rains and floods almost every year. This is because of monsoon rains and typhoons that hit the country between June and November.

However, experts say that because of climate change, these rains are becoming stronger and causing more damage than before. Climate change means the Earth's temperature is rising, which leads to extreme weather like heavy rains, strong storms, and floods.

Impact On Daily Life And Businesses

Because of the floods, many shops, markets, and businesses remained closed. People could not go to work, and children could not go to school. Public transport services like buses, jeepneys, and trains were stopped in many areas as the roads were filled with water.

Drivers who were out during the rain had to leave their vehicles on the roads because they could not move in the flooded streets. Some cars were almost fully submerged in the water.

How Are People Coping With The Situation?

Despite the difficulties, people are trying their best to stay safe and calm. Some are helping their neighbours carry things to dry places. Others are cooking food together in shelters and sharing it with those who need it.

Children in shelters are being kept busy with drawing and small games to keep them away from fear and sadness. Volunteers are also organising activities to make them smile despite losing their homes temporarily.

Government's Appeal To The People

Government officials have asked everyone to follow safety rules during this time. They have also warned people not to cross flooded streets as the water may be deeper than it looks and can carry strong currents.

They have promised that they will continue to provide food, shelter, and medical help to everyone affected until they can return safely to their homes.

Long-Term Solutions Needed To Prevent Future Floods

Experts say that to stop such floods in the future, the government needs to improve the drainage systems in cities. Cleaning rivers and building better flood control systems can help reduce the damage during heavy rains

Philippines flooding displaces thousands, two missing

Planting more trees and protecting forests also helps, as trees absorb rainwater and reduce flooding.

The recent floods in Manila have shown how strong rains can quickly affect millions of lives. While rescue teams and the government are working hard to help, people are also helping each other in these difficult times. The country hopes for clear weather soon so that families can return to their homes and start rebuilding their lives.
