Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s latest horror comedy, Thamma, has achieved a significant milestone, crossing the ₹200 crore mark globally in less than three weeks of release. The film, which is part of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), has now become the 8th-highest-grossing Indian film of 2025, surpassing Salman Khan’s Sikandar.

This success underlines the growing popularity of the horror-comedy genre in India and the appeal of franchise-based storytelling among domestic audiences.

Domestic Box Office Performance

According to Maddock Films, the production company behind the project, Thamma has earned approximately ₹153.18 crore net (around ₹183.50 crore gross) in 20 days at Indian theatres. While the film continues to draw audiences, its daily domestic collections have slowed to ₹1.50–2 crore, reflecting a natural decline typical for films in their third week of screening.

Despite this slowdown, the film’s strong initial performance and sustained footfall have contributed to its rapid climb up the box office charts.

Overseas Performance

Overseas markets have not matched the domestic fervor, yet Thamma has successfully earned over $2.5 million internationally. This brings the total worldwide gross to approximately ₹206 crore, though some trade trackers report a slightly conservative figure of ₹185 crore.

The international earnings reflect the niche appeal of Indian horror-comedy films abroad, where cultural references and localized humor may not resonate as strongly, yet the star power of Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna has ensured a respectable performance.

Comparisons and Franchise Impact

In the context of Indian cinema this year, Thamma has surpassed the lifetime collections of Sikandar, which earned ₹177 crore, and even overtaken the global total of Stree (₹184 crore), making it the second-highest-grossing film in the MHCU franchise. The only film ahead in the franchise is Stree 2, which grossed an astonishing ₹874 crore, a benchmark unlikely for Thamma to match but indicative of the franchise’s growing influence.

The film’s performance underscores the strategic expansion of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, which has now cemented itself as a profitable and audience-loved cinematic universe.

About the Film: Plot and Cast

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma is a unique vampire film that blends local Indian folklore with horror comedy, offering audiences both thrills and humor. The film features a stellar ensemble cast, including:

  • Ayushmann Khurrana

  • Rashmika Mandanna

  • Nawazuddin Siddiqui

  • Paresh Rawal

Additionally, Varun Dhawan makes a special cameo, reprising his role from Bhediya and Stree 2, creating crossover appeal and reinforcing the interconnected narrative of the franchise.

Future of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe

Thamma also lays the foundation for the next installment in the MHCU, titled Shakti Shalini, which will feature Aneet Padda from Saiyaara. The franchise currently has seven other films planned, including sequels to standalone films and a two-part mega-crossover set for 2029, promising an expanded universe that fans can follow for years.

The success of Thamma demonstrates the effectiveness of franchise storytelling in Indian cinema, particularly when combining horror, comedy, and cultural elements that resonate with audiences.Thamma’s box office success is a testament to Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s star power, as well as the growing popularity of franchise-based horror comedies in India. With a worldwide gross surpassing ₹200 crore and a lasting impact on the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, the film has firmly established itself as one of the biggest hits of 2025, both commercially and culturally.
