Hyderabad — Eminent Telangana poet and lyricist Andesri, best known for writing the state’s official song “Jaya Jayahe Telangana”, passed away at the age of 64 while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad. His death marks the loss of one of the most influential voices of the Telangana movement.
According to hospital sources, Andesri’s health deteriorated late Sunday night. He reportedly collapsed at his residence in Lalaguda, following which his family members rushed him to Gandhi Hospital. Despite the doctors’ efforts, he breathed his last around 7:30 a.m. on Monday.
Born as Ande Yellaiah in Rebarthi village of Jangaon district, Andesri rose to prominence despite having no formal education. His passion for poetry and language earned him immense respect across the state. His popular work “Mayamai Pothunnadamma” brought him widespread recognition, and Kakatiya University later awarded him an honorary doctorate for his contributions to literature and culture.
A staunch supporter of the Telangana movement, Andesri’s poems and songs became powerful symbols of the people’s aspirations for statehood. His lyrical masterpiece “Jaya Jayahe Telangana” was officially adopted as the Telangana State Song, capturing the pride, struggle, and spirit of the region.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow over the poet’s demise, describing it as an irreparable loss to the state’s literary and cultural landscape. He also recalled felicitating Andesri earlier this year on Telangana Formation Day and announced that his last rites will be performed with full State Honours.
Andesri is survived by his son and three daughters. Tributes have been pouring in from poets, writers, and admirers across Telangana, remembering him as a poet of the people whose words gave voice to an entire movement.
