A couple from Kazakhstan has been arrested in Sydney after authorities uncovered an elaborate cheating operation that allegedly helped them win more than Rs 7 crore (A$1.2 million) at the Crown casino. The pair — 36-year-old Dilnoza Israilova and her 44-year-old husband, Alisherykhoja Israilov — had arrived in Australia only weeks earlier before quickly becoming frequent high-rollers on the gaming floor.
Their unusual winning streak first drew attention, but it was a tiny camera hidden inside a Mickey Mouse T-shirt that ultimately exposed the operation. According to police, casino security staff noticed the discreet device during one of the couple’s visits and immediately raised an alert.
Soon after, officers reached the Barangaroo casino and detained the woman and her husband. Investigators alleged that the miniature camera was positioned to capture live images of the card tables, transmitting the footage directly to the couple’s phones. Both were reportedly equipped with hidden earpieces, allowing real-time communication and instructions on how to place bets.
A search of their belongings uncovered more equipment suspected to be part of the cheating setup — including magnetised probes, a mirror attachment for a mobile phone and additional gambling tools. The camera-enabled T-shirt is believed to have played a central role in relaying visual information during multiple winning sessions.
Police later searched the couple’s Sydney accommodation, where they seized more gambling devices, valuable jewellery and around Rs 2 lakh (2,000 euros) in cash. Officers allege that the couple used this method over several visits, steadily accumulating unusually high payouts.
The pair has been charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage and remains in custody. Dilnoza is scheduled to return to court in February, while Alisherykhoja is expected to appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on December 11.
