India's newly-appointed T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has made a remarkable start to his tenure by matching Virat Kohli's world record for the most Player of the Match awards in T20 internationals, but with a notable difference in the time taken to achieve it. Yadav reached this milestone in just 69 matches, significantly faster than Kohli, who needed 125 matches to accumulate the same number of awards.

Yadav’s achievement came during the first T20I of India’s series against Sri Lanka, where he led his team to a convincing 43-run victory. India set a formidable total of 213/7, thanks to crucial contributions from Yadav, who scored 58 runs off 26 balls. His all-round performance not only secured him the Player of the Match award but also highlighted his strategic acumen as a captain.

In the post-match presentation, Yadav praised the Sri Lankan team for their competitive spirit, acknowledging their strong performance. "They played a good brand of cricket from the start and kept the tempo. We were fortunate to avoid dew, which can be tricky in night games. We learned a lot from the World Cup, and we'll adapt as needed for the team’s success," Yadav said.

Sri Lanka's captain, Charith Asalanka, won the toss and chose to bowl first. India's innings was anchored by Suryakumar Yadav, alongside valuable contributions from Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill. Despite a strong bowling effort from Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana, who claimed four wickets for 40 runs, India managed to post a daunting target.

In response, Sri Lanka was restricted to 170 runs in 19.2 overs. Pathum Nissanka was the top scorer for Sri Lanka, making 79 runs off 48 balls, supported by Kushal Mendis, who added 45 runs from 27 balls. However, their efforts were insufficient to chase down India's total.

For India, spinner Riyan Parag emerged as the highest wicket-taker, claiming three wickets for just five runs in 1.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravi Bishnoi also contributed with key wickets, ensuring a comprehensive win for India. With this victory, India leads the three-match series 1-0.

Most Player of the Match Awards in T20Is:

  • Suryakumar Yadav (India) – 16 in 69 matches
  • Virat Kohli (India) – 16 in 125 matches
  • Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe) – 15 in 91 matches
  • Mohammad Nabi (Afghanistan) – 14 in 129 matches
  • Rohit Sharma (India) – 14 in 159 matches

Yadav's performance and his rapid achievement of this record underscore his significant impact on the T20 format and his promising future as a leader in Indian cricket.
