A big earthquake of 6.2 magnitude hit Istanbul on Wednesday, according to Turkey’s AFAD disaster agency. This was one of the strongest quakes in the city in recent years.

The earthquake happened at 12:49 PM local time. The center of the quake was in Silivri, a town 80 kilometers west of Istanbul. The quake was about 7 kilometers deep underground, AFAD said. Another group, the German Research Centre for Geosciences, said the earthquake’s magnitude was 6.02 and it was 10 kilometers deep.

Many people in the city quickly left their buildings when the earthquake struck, but there were no reports of major damage. The city of Istanbul, with 16 million people, was shaken by the tremor that reached both the European and Asian sides of the city.

A person was reported to have been injured after jumping from a balcony during the quake. The earthquake happened on a public holiday in Turkey.

AFAD warned people not to enter buildings that might have been damaged by the quake. It’s important for everyone to stay safe and wait for authorities to check the buildings before going back inside.
