In a disturbing murder case unfolding in Kota Kinabalu, a 71-year-old man has been ordered by the court to undergo a psychiatric evaluation following his arrest for the brutal murder and dismemberment of his former fiancée. This directive emerges amidst a climate of fear and disbelief in the local community.
Piluta Samad, the accused, is set to be observed for mental health issues over the next 30 days at Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang. The magistrate approved this request from his defense team, which highlighted serious concerns regarding his mental state, influenced by his peculiar behavior and statements.
As stated by the defense attorney, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to ascertain Piluta's mental health. Additionally, the court has permitted an extension of this observation period for an additional 30 days if necessary.
While the prosecution opposed this evaluation, they noted to the court that critical evidence—including chemical analyses and post-mortem reports—remains pending. These documents are anticipated to significantly impact the ongoing investigation.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred in February 2026 at a home in Kampung Sri Kenangan, where the remains of the 44-year-old victim were found in various locations, creating a media frenzy.
The charges stem from Section 302 of the Malaysian Penal Code, which imposes heavy punishments that could include the death penalty or lengthy imprisonment. A possible sentence of caning also looms if he is convicted without capital punishment.
The next court hearing is set for May 15, 2026, while Piluta Samad continues to be held in custody. This case is expected to escalate to the High Court for formal plea proceedings.
