New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin's warm reception of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent two-day visit to Moscow has sparked concern in the West, particularly among those with narrow strategic perspectives and limited understanding of the complex security dynamics in Asia-Pacific.
PM Modi's embrace of President Putin was not just symbolic but strategic, signaling that Russia does not need to rely solely on China amidst Western pressures post-Ukraine conflict. It also underscored India's stance against allowing its vulnerabilities with China to translate into vulnerabilities with Western powers.
This visit, the first by an Indian PM to Austria since 1983, highlighted India's openness to engaging with non-NATO countries for advanced infrastructure technologies and winter equipment.
Rather than being misinterpreted as a rebuff to India's Western allies by some Western media, the bilateral meeting in Moscow should be contextualized historically. The US' historical support for Pakistan, including during conflicts like the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971, as well as the tumultuous periods of Khalistan and Kashmir terrorism from 1980 to 2000, has shaped India's strategic autonomy outlook.
PM Modi's commitment to "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" and initiatives like the Agniveer scheme reflect India's resolve to build a self-reliant and nationalistic foundation by 2047.
Amid PM Modi's proactive diplomatic initiatives, India's diplomats and intelligence agencies must align with India's interests as it strives to become the world's third-largest economy this decade.
India's policy of strategic autonomy, not aligning with either Western or Chinese camps, necessitates diplomatic efforts that prioritize India's interests over biases influenced by Western or Russian influences.
Despite challenges posed by Anglo-Saxon powers, India's intelligence apparatus must enhance domain awareness, particularly concerning adversaries like China, amidst ongoing developments in PLA leadership and military capabilities.

Questions regarding Chinese military advancements, including technological capabilities and regional tensions in Tibet and Xinjiang, underscore the need for comprehensive intelligence and strategic responses along India's militarized Line of Actual Control (LAC).
With China exerting economic and military influence over neighboring countries like Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Maldives, India is compelled to bolster both economic and military capacities independently, wary of conditional Western support.
Internal security and counter-intelligence efforts must also intensify to address threats from Western powers, Pakistan, and China, along with domestic adversaries in regions like Kashmir and Punjab.
Prime Minister Modi faces increasing challenges amid opposition criticism, requiring robust policies to navigate India's complex security and geopolitical landscape effectively.
