Sri Lanka's Tourism Ministry received notice that Russian and Ukrainian tourists, who had been staying in the country on extended visas due to the war between their countries, are required to leave within two weeks from February 23 as their visas have expired. The immigration controller issued this directive, prompting thousands of tourists from Russia and Ukraine to prepare for their departure from the island nation. However, President Ranil Wickremesinghe's office intervened by ordering an investigation into the decision, questioning how it was made without a cabinet decision to revoke the previous visa extensions. The President's Media Division clarified that the government had not officially decided to revoke the extensions granted to these tourists.
The extended stays for Russian and Ukrainian tourists were initially permitted due to flight shortages caused by the conflict between their countries. Since the outbreak of the war in 2022, approximately 300,000 Russians and 20,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Sri Lanka. However, the exact number of tourists currently residing on extended visas is not known. Despite the initial rationale for allowing longer stays, authorities have noted complaints about the misuse of tourist visas by some individuals from these countries. Allegations include involvement in illegal businesses, employment of foreigners, and the use of payment methods that bypass local systems.
The situation highlights the complexities surrounding visa regulations and the challenges faced by both tourists and authorities amidst geopolitical tensions. It also underscores the need for clear communication and decision-making processes within the government to address such matters effectively while ensuring the interests of all stakeholders are considered.
