Space42, in partnership with global communications leader Viasat, Inc., has announced the formation of Equatys, a jointly held entity designed to enable global Direct-to-Device (D2D) services and transform existing Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) into a 5G network environment. The new venture aims to combine satellite and terrestrial networks to provide reliable connectivity to billions of people and devices worldwide.

Equatys represents a major step forward in satellite communications, bridging the gap between space-based infrastructure and terrestrial networks. By leveraging a 3GPP Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) Release compliant platform, Equatys will allow standard smartphones and IoT devices to access MSS services without the need for specialized terminals. This platform is expected to support more than 100 MHz of harmonized MSS spectrum already allocated across over 160 global markets, providing a foundation for scalable, universal communications.

Global Connectivity and Technology Goals

The primary goal of Equatys is to achieve universal connectivity by merging terrestrial and satellite capabilities. For decades, the satellite industry has sought to extend coverage beyond traditional networks, and Equatys aims to deliver on this promise by creating a multi-orbit, shared infrastructure platform.

According to Karim Sabbagh, Managing Director of Space42, and Ali Al Hashemi, CEO of Space Services at Space42:

"Equatys will achieve what the satellite industry has pursued for decades: combining the scale of terrestrial networks with the efficiency of space. The promise of universal connectivity is now becoming a reality. Backed by global spectrum, proven technology, and strong partners, Equatys represents infrastructure built to power societies and transform economies worldwide."

This innovative approach will allow millions of users to stay connected, including urban and rural communities, while supporting critical industries such as transport, logistics, healthcare, and emergency services.

Viasat’s Contribution and Network Design

Viasat will bring its experience in high-performance satellite communication systems to Equatys. Mark Dankberg, Chairman and CEO of Viasat, stated:

"Equatys will uniquely make possible a shared multi-orbit network of scale with standards-based open architecture to address the significant D2D and next-generation MSS market opportunity. By leveraging high-performance transparent satellite architectures and shared infrastructure, the network will deliver cost-efficient capacity and use 5G New Radio standards."

This architecture will not only improve connectivity but will also evolve existing MSS services, including those used for air, land, and sea safety communications. By adopting a 5G open-standard platform, Equatys will ensure compatibility with future mobile networks while offering low-cost and scalable solutions for operators worldwide.

Shared Infrastructure Model

Equatys will operate using a multi-tenant, shared infrastructure approach, reducing duplication of investment while providing cost-efficient capacity for multiple stakeholders. Unlike traditional single-operator satellite networks, this shared model allows:

  • Multiple licensed operators to access the same spectrum.

  • Governments to maintain control over national data and infrastructure.

  • Local space industries to participate in technology development and manufacturing.

The approach promotes a sustainable, collaborative ecosystem, ensuring that infrastructure investments are optimized and risk is shared among participants.

Benefits for Operators and End-Users

The Equatys platform is designed to deliver significant advantages for operators and end-users, including:

  1. Lower-cost network deployment – Shared satellite and ground infrastructure reduces expenses.

  2. Universal accessibility – Standard smartphones and IoT devices can access MSS networks without specialized hardware.

  3. Flexible deployment – Operators can scale coverage and capacity efficiently based on regional demand.

  4. Data sovereignty – Governments can operate and maintain critical infrastructure locally, ensuring national security and compliance.

  5. Support for emerging markets – Remote regions and underserved communities will benefit from direct connectivity.

Equatys is expected to create new commercial opportunities for satellite operators and industries leveraging connected technologies, from autonomous vehicles to smart cities.

Technical Framework and 3GPP Compliance

Equatys’ platform will follow the 3GPP NTN Release framework, ensuring compatibility with existing 5G network standards. This compliance allows operators to integrate satellite links seamlessly with terrestrial 5G networks, enabling continuous coverage and low-latency communications.

The system will operate as a neutral "space tower", offering licensed operators shared access to satellite spectrum blocks previously confined to individual satellite systems. By doing so, Equatys ensures efficient utilization of spectrum, maximizes capacity, and reduces operational costs for all network participants.

Global Market Potential

The joint venture targets a wide range of industries and regions, including:

  • Telecommunications – Expanding mobile coverage in rural and remote areas.

  • IoT and smart devices – Providing reliable connectivity for sensors, logistics, and monitoring systems.

  • Maritime and aviation – Ensuring safety, tracking, and real-time data exchange.

  • Emergency services and disaster response – Offering resilient communication networks in crisis situations.

By leveraging a global multi-orbit architecture, Equatys can offer continuous coverage across continents, addressing both commercial and critical infrastructure needs.

Economic and Technological Implications

The creation of Equatys represents a strategic milestone for the satellite communications sector. It demonstrates the potential to:

  • Reduce capital expenditure through shared infrastructure.

  • Promote industry collaboration, avoiding fragmented network deployment.

  • Enable next-generation services through 5G-enabled satellite networks.

  • Boost local technological capabilities by involving domestic space industries in both manufacturing and operations.

Analysts suggest that Equatys could redefine global satellite communications, creating new market opportunities while improving connectivity in regions traditionally underserved by terrestrial networks.

Expected Commercial Rollout

Equatys plans to launch its commercial services within three years, initially focusing on regions with high MSS demand and expanding globally. The deployment strategy will leverage existing spectrum, satellite technology, and terrestrial networks to ensure efficient service coverage.

The shared, multi-operator model will allow early participants to gain scale advantages, while minimizing individual financial risks. This collaborative approach is expected to set a precedent for future satellite network ventures.

The establishment of Equatys by Space42 and Viasat marks a significant development in the evolution of global connectivity. By combining satellite and terrestrial networks, adopting 5G standards, and enabling Direct-to-Device services, the venture aims to provide reliable, cost-efficient, and scalable communication solutions to billions of people and devices worldwide.

With its shared infrastructure model, Equatys promotes collaboration among operators, supports national data sovereignty, and fosters participation from local space industries. As the commercial rollout approaches, Equatys has the potential to transform the satellite communications industry, bridging the gap between technology, accessibility, and economic development on a global scale.
