On Saturday, September 13, 2025, London witnessed one of the largest nationalist demonstrations in decades. The event, called “Unite the Kingdom,” was organized by far-right activist Tommy Robinson. More than 100,000 people attended the rally, waving Union Jack flags and England’s St. George flags, turning central London into a sea of national symbols. The rally came amid growing political concern over immigration, particularly the arrival of migrants across the English Channel in small boats.
During the event, violence broke out when some protesters attempted to breach lines that separated them from a smaller anti-racist counter-demonstration. Police reported that 26 officers were injured, four of them seriously, while 25 people were arrested, with more arrests expected in the following days.
Authorities expressed concern over recent incidents across the country, where hotels used to house asylum seekers became targets of small but heated protests, some of which turned violent over the summer.

Elon Musk’s Controversial Address
Elon Musk, the owner of X and Tesla, addressed the rally via video link, making statements that shocked many in Britain and abroad. Musk called for the dissolution of Parliament, an early election, and a change of government. Most strikingly, he told protesters: “Violence is coming to you. You either fight back or you die.”
These comments immediately drew criticism from British political leaders, law enforcement officials, and civil rights advocates.
Political Leaders Condemn Musk’s Remarks
Prime Minister and Opposition Responses
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has not commented directly on Musk’s statements. However, he emphasized on X (formerly Twitter) that: “Peaceful protest is core to our country’s values. But we will not stand for assaults on police officers doing their job or for people feeling intimidated on our streets because of their background or the color of their skin.”
Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey urged both Starmer and Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch to join him in condemning Musk’s words, calling them an attempt “to sow discord and incite violence on our streets” and interfere with the democratic process in Britain. Davey also suggested that the government consider what sanctions Elon Musk should face for his remarks.
Other senior officials, including Equalities Minister Jacqui Smith, said Musk’s comments were “wrong and dangerous,” while Business Secretary Peter Kyle described them as “slightly incomprehensible” and “totally inappropriate”. However, Kyle also acknowledged that the event demonstrated that free speech remains alive in Britain.
The Far-Right Context in Europe
Elon Musk has previously expressed support for hard-right and far-right figures in Europe. This includes Tommy Robinson, who is a convicted fraudster and the founder of the anti-Islam group English Defense League. Musk has also shown support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which has stirred controversy across the continent.
Musk is a known critic of efforts by European governments, including the UK, to regulate online content he considers harmful. He often frames these regulations as an attack on free speech, arguing that such measures limit public debate.
The Immigration Debate in Britain
The rally comes at a time of heightened political concern over immigration. More than 30,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats from France so far in 2025. Authorities from Britain, France, and other countries have worked to crack down on people-smuggling gangs behind these dangerous crossings.
The use of hotels to accommodate asylum seekers has emerged as a major political issue, sparking protests in towns and cities across the country. While most protests have been peaceful, some turned violent during the summer, contributing to growing social tension.
Symbols and Messages at the Rally
The rally featured a heavy display of British and English national symbols. Union Jacks and St. George flags were seen throughout central London, with some activists painting red crosses on buildings. These gestures, some observers noted, were intended to intimidate ethnic minorities, even as organizers claimed the event was about patriotism.
In response to the rally, Prime Minister Starmer stressed that: “Britain is a nation proudly built on tolerance, diversity, and respect. Our flag represents our diverse country and we will never surrender it to those that use it as a symbol of violence, fear, and division.”
The Broader Impact
The Unite the Kingdom rally highlighted deep divisions in British society. On one side, there is a concern over unauthorized immigration and national identity, while on the other, there is a strong call to protect minority communities and uphold the rule of law.
The involvement of high-profile figures like Elon Musk, who directly addressed the crowd encouraging violence, adds another layer of controversy. Political leaders across the spectrum are now debating how to respond to foreign influence in domestic affairs, particularly when such influence may encourage violence and undermine democracy.
Law Enforcement Challenges
Police faced a difficult task during the rally, having to maintain peace between the large far-right crowd and anti-racist counter-protesters. The injuries to officers and multiple arrests underscore the tension and the potential for large-scale unrest when political issues like immigration and national identity are publicly debated.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and further arrests are likely. These developments reflect the UK’s ongoing struggle to balance freedom of speech, public safety, and the protection of vulnerable communities.
The events in London on September 13, 2025, serve as a reminder of the power of words and influence in modern politics. Elon Musk’s call to arms at a far-right rally has sparked calls for sanctions and ignited debate on the limits of free speech, the role of foreign figures in domestic politics, and the need to protect law enforcement and vulnerable communities.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other political leaders continue to emphasize tolerance, diversity, and respect, seeking to reassure the public that violence and intimidation will not define Britain.
The Unite the Kingdom rally is likely to remain a landmark moment in UK political history, highlighting the ongoing tension between nationalist movements, immigration debates, and the responsibilities of public figures in shaping public behavior.
