Simone Tata, the visionary co-founder of Lakmé Cosmetics and a prominent icon in India's entrepreneurial and charitable circles, passed away at 95 on the morning of December 5, 2025. Her peaceful departure at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital followed a brief illness; she had previously received care at Dubai's King’s Hospital. Known as the mother of Noel Tata, chair of Tata Trusts, and the stepmother to the late Ratan Tata, Simone's legacy has left an undeniable impact on India's beauty and retail sectors.

The Tata Group expressed their sorrow in a touching statement, acknowledging her invaluable influence on Lakmé, which flourished into a leading cosmetic brand under her stewardship. The tribute also recognized her innovative role in founding the Westside retail chain alongside her commitment to philanthropic initiatives, such as the Sir Ratan Tata Institute. “Her positivity and resilience allowed her to face life's challenges while inspiring all of us. May she rest in peace, and may we find strength in this loss,” the group remarked.

Originally from Switzerland, Simone moved to India in the 1950s, marrying Naval H. Tata in 1955 and establishing her roots in Bombay. Her journey within the Tata family commenced in the early '60s when she joined the Lakmé Board, turning a then-subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills into a household brand. In 1961, she became Managing Director, later taking the role of Chairperson in 1982. Her vision bolstered Lakmé's status in India and set the stage for its global recognition.

In 1996, Lakmé merged with Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL), with Simone utilizing those proceeds to create Trent and the beloved Westside retail brand. Her influence reached well beyond beauty and retail; she was actively engaged in social, cultural, and charitable causes, holding roles such as chairman of the Sir Ratan Tata Institute and trustee positions with Children of the World India and the India Foundation for the Arts.

Survived by her son Noel Tata, his wife Aloo Mistry, and her grandchildren Neville, Maya, and Leah, Simone's contributions have left a lasting imprint on the Indian business scene and charitable sectors, serving as an inspiration for future generations. A farewell ceremony is scheduled for the Cathedral of the Holy Name Church in Colaba, Mumbai.

Simone Tata's remarkable journey from a Swiss pioneer to a beloved business leader and philanthropist showcases her determination, insight, and kindness, securing her legacy within India's corporate and social realms. Her influence on Lakmé, Westside, and numerous charitable ventures will continue to resonate across India’s beauty, retail, and philanthropic landscapes.
