Bengaluru CM Seeks Wipro Help to Reduce ORR Traffic

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approached Wipro founder chairman Azim Premji to consider allowing limited vehicular movement through the company's campus on Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) to reduce traffic congestion.

In a letter dated September 19, the chief minister highlighted that the ORR, particularly the Iblur junction, faces severe traffic congestion during peak hours, affecting mobility, productivity, and the quality of urban life.

“In this context, I wish to explore the possibility of allowing limited vehicular movement through the Wipro campus, subject to mutually agreed terms and necessary security considerations,” Siddaramaiah wrote. “Preliminary assessments by traffic and urban mobility experts indicate that such a measure could reduce congestion on adjoining stretches of the ORR by nearly 30 per cent, particularly during peak office hours.”

Siddaramaiah praised Wipro’s contributions to the state’s IT ecosystem and socio-economic development, and urged Premji’s support in easing traffic bottlenecks, enhancing commuter experience, and making Bengaluru more efficient and livable. He requested the Wipro team to engage with government officials to finalize a mutually acceptable plan.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns from industry veterans about traffic issues along the ORR. Recently, former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai and Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw urged the government to intervene after online trucking platform BlackBuck decided to relocate from its Bellandur office, citing commuting challenges and inadequate road infrastructure.

Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road is a critical IT corridor, and congestion during peak hours has long been a major issue for commuters and businesses alike. The proposed measure, if implemented, could provide significant relief to daily traffic woes.

Officials from Wipro have not yet responded publicly to the CM’s request. Discussions between Wipro and government authorities are expected to take place soon.
