OpenAI, Oracle & SoftBank Launch 5 US AI Centres

OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announced on Tuesday plans to open five new artificial intelligence (AI) data centre sites across the United States as part of OpenAI’s Stargate infrastructure platform. The expansion aims to support large-scale AI development and strengthen the nation’s AI capabilities.

The new sites will increase Stargate’s total planned capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts, with total investments exceeding $400 billion over the next three years. The companies said this puts them ahead of schedule to reach a $500 billion investment and 10-gigawatt capacity target by the end of 2025.

Three of the new locations are in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a yet-to-be-announced site in the Midwest. Near OpenAI’s Abilene, Texas, campus, an additional 600 megawatts of capacity may be added. The other two sites, developed jointly by SoftBank and OpenAI, will scale up to 1.5 gigawatts within 18 months. One is under construction in Lordstown, Ohio, and the second will be built in Milam County, Texas, with SB Energy, a SoftBank company.

The projects are expected to create more than 25,000 onsite jobs and tens of thousands of indirect jobs nationwide. Local communities are likely to benefit from infrastructure development, construction, and supporting services.

OpenAI and Oracle’s partnership, announced in July, includes plans to develop up to 4.5 gigawatts of additional Stargate capacity, representing over $300 billion in investment over five years. The goal is to enhance AI research, high-performance computing, and cloud-based operations, while reducing costs for large-scale AI applications.

The new sites will integrate with the existing Abilene campus, already active on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, ensuring seamless operations and efficient management of AI workloads across multiple locations. Officials emphasized that these five initial sites are part of a broader expansion strategy to position the United States as a global hub for advanced AI development.
