Two passengers were injured after a Houston-bound plane faced severe turbulence and suddenly dropped 4,350 feet in just 44 seconds. The flight, operated by SkyWest as United Express Flight 5971, had taken off from Aspen, Colorado, on Thursday evening.
The turbulence struck about 90 minutes into the flight as the plane passed near Fort Worth, flying at an altitude of 39,000 feet. Flight tracking data shows that in less than a minute, the plane dropped to 34,650 feet, then climbed back to 37,450 feet. Shortly after, the pilots decided to divert the flight to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, where the plane landed safely at around 8 pm local time.
According to emergency reports, one of the pilots told ground responders that a stretcher was needed and that there was bleeding on board. Despite the injuries, medical authorities confirmed that no injuries were life-threatening. Airline officials said their top priority is the safety and well-being of passengers, and they are assisting those affected.
Severe turbulence occurs when strong air movements create forces greater than 1.5 times the weight of a passenger, which is enough to lift someone out of their seat if they are not wearing a seatbelt. While deaths from turbulence are extremely rare, incidents like this show the potential dangers for passengers and highlight the need for better safety measures in aviation.

A recent study warns that climate change could make turbulence worse in the future, affecting flights all over the world, not just in one hemisphere. This means that air travel may become bumpier and potentially more dangerous unless airlines and engineers find ways to improve safety.
Passengers described the turbulence as violent and terrifying, with drinks spilling and people being thrown against seat belts. The airline reminded travelers to keep seatbelts fastened whenever seated, as sudden turbulence can happen without warning.
After the incident, SkyWest and United are working together to provide support, medical care, and assistance to all passengers. The aviation industry continues to monitor turbulence patterns closely, as severe turbulence events are increasing globally due to changing weather patterns.
Experts also say that passenger safety in the air relies on a combination of careful flight planning, updated technology, and awareness of weather risks. Severe turbulence can occur unexpectedly, even on clear days, making it one of the most unpredictable risks in air travel.
For passengers, the key takeaway is simple: always keep your seatbelt fastened while seated, and follow crew instructions carefully. These small precautions can prevent injuries during sudden turbulence events.
