A high-profile trial began Monday in Magdeburg, Germany, for a Saudi doctor accused of carrying out a deadly attack on a Christmas market last December that killed six people and injured more than 300 others.

The suspect, identified as 51-year-old Taleb A., is alleged to have intentionally driven a rented BMW through the crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg’s city center on December 20, 2024, at speeds of up to 48 km/h (29 mph).

Prosecutors say the horrific attack occurred at 7:02 p.m. local time and lasted barely over a minute, but caused devastating consequences. The victims included a nine-year-old boy and five women aged between 45 and 75.

Authorities have charged Taleb A. with six counts of murder, 338 counts of attempted murder, 309 counts of grievous bodily harm, and dangerous interference with road traffic. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment.

According to prosecutors in Saxony-Anhalt, the suspect was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the incident. They allege that he acted “out of dissatisfaction and frustration” linked to a personal legal dispute and the failure of his previous criminal complaints.

The investigation revealed that Taleb A. meticulously planned the attack for weeks, acting alone and without accomplices. Prosecutors believe his intention was to kill as many people as possible.

A temporary courthouse has been constructed in Magdeburg to accommodate the large number of victims, witnesses, and relatives expected to attend the trial.

Authorities noted that Taleb A. had a complex personal background. Originally from Saudi Arabia, he had sought asylum in Germany. Unlike typical terror suspects, officials described him as “untypical”, pointing out that he had publicly criticized Islam and expressed support for Germany’s far-right party, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), on social media.

The Magdeburg attack has drawn parallels to other violent incidents targeting Germany’s Christmas markets in recent years, which have been a source of national grief and heightened security concerns.

The trial is expected to run for several months, with testimonies from survivors, law enforcement, and forensic experts providing insight into the attacker’s motives and the tragic events of that night.
