Saudi Defense Minister Visits Tehran Ahead of Iran-US Talks

Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister, Prince Khalid bin Salman, arrived in Tehran on Thursday. He is there to meet with Iranian officials before important talks between Iran and the United States about Iran’s nuclear program. These talks are set to happen over the weekend.

Before Prince Khalid's visit, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, met with US Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Muscat, Oman. This was the highest-level meeting between the US and Iran since the 2015 nuclear deal fell apart. Both sides said the talks were “constructive,” meaning they were helpful and productive.

These talks are important because they happen after US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In the letter, Trump called for talks about Iran’s nuclear program and warned that the US might take military action if Iran refuses.

Iran has been having talks with its allies, like Russia and China, about the nuclear program. Russia has been encouraging diplomatic talks and has warned that a war between the US and Iran would be terrible for the world.

Another round of talks between the US and Iran is planned for Saturday, April 19. Iran has not confirmed where the talks will happen, but some sources say they will take place in Rome, Italy.

In previous talks in Oman, Iran and the US agreed to meet again. These talks are very important because President Trump has warned of military action if they don’t reach an agreement.

After the meeting in Oman, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, posted on his Telegram account that he and his team briefly met with the US team, led by Steve Witkoff. The talks were indirect, meaning there were no face-to-face meetings, and Oman helped to organize them.

The US and Iran are under pressure to reach an agreement about Iran’s nuclear program. The world is watching closely, hoping they can avoid conflict and find a peaceful solution.
