Washington, Nov 19, 2025 — The presence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House has reignited global scrutiny and intense emotions among 9/11 survivors, who voiced fury over his visit even as he assured Americans that Saudi Arabia is taking steps to prevent future tragedies.
Speaking alongside former US President Donald Trump during a joint media briefing, Prince Salman addressed reporters about both the September 11, 2001, attacks and the 2018 assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. “It’s painful to hear about anyone losing their life for no real purpose. It was a huge mistake, and we are doing everything to ensure it doesn’t happen again,” Salman said, emphasizing Saudi Arabia’s commitment to safeguarding international security.
Prince Salman claimed that Osama bin Laden exploited Saudi nationals during the 9/11 attacks to damage US–Saudi relations. “Anyone who believes this narrative is helping fulfill Bin Laden’s purpose,” he asserted, highlighting the need to maintain strong diplomatic ties between Riyadh and Washington to counter extremism effectively.
Despite these statements, 9/11 survivors expressed anger and disbelief at the crown prince’s presence at the Oval Office. Many argue that accountability for the attacks and Khashoggi’s murder remains unresolved. US intelligence agencies concluded in 2021 that Prince Salman ordered the killing of Khashoggi, though the crown prince continues to deny involvement.
Survivors’ advocacy groups stressed that while diplomatic and economic ties between the US and Saudi Arabia are crucial, true justice and transparency are necessary for healing. “The visit is a stark reminder that the victims’ families still seek accountability,” said one spokesperson for the 9/11 Victims’ Families Association.
Trump, standing beside the crown prince, defended Salman against questions regarding Khashoggi’s death, insisting, “He knew nothing about it.” The defense has drawn criticism amid ongoing debates over human rights, press freedom, and US foreign policy.
Prince Salman’s visit coincides with efforts to advance civilian nuclear cooperation and defense deals, including the sale of F-35 jets. Yet the shadow of past tragedies, including 9/11 and Khashoggi’s assassination, looms large, highlighting the tension between realpolitik and moral accountability in US-Saudi relations.
Analysts say the visit demonstrates the delicate balancing act between diplomacy and historical grievances. While Saudi Arabia seeks to strengthen strategic partnerships and reassure allies, victims and human rights advocates continue to call for recognition, apology, and reform.
The visit underscores ongoing challenges in US-Saudi relations, particularly as it pertains to transparency, accountability, and international trust. It also highlights the long-lasting impact of 9/11 and high-profile incidents like Khashoggi’s killing on diplomacy, security policies, and global perceptions of Saudi leadership.
As the crown prince continues engagements in Washington, the world watches closely, weighing assurances of reform against the demands for justice from victims and international observers.
