At the traditional craft pavilions of Saudi International Handicrafts Week, also known as Banan, craftsman Abdulaziz Al-Zouman is showcasing the timeless art of Sadu weaving. Sadu is a traditional Saudi craft known for its geometric patterns, often seen in tents, cushions, and rugs. Through his work, Al-Zouman is keeping this centuries-old heritage alive while introducing it to a modern audience. His display draws attention to the rich cultural traditions of Saudi Arabia and highlights the importance of preserving these arts for future generations.
Abdulaziz Al-Zouman began working with Sadu weaving four years ago. He learned the craft under the guidance of a skilled craftswoman in Taif, a city known for its traditional handicrafts. Since then, he has been working alongside his wife, combining their skills to create unique and engaging pieces. Their collaboration demonstrates how traditional crafts can evolve through teamwork and creativity, allowing the art to reach a wider audience.
The couple has adapted Sadu weaving in ways that appeal to both local Saudi visitors and international guests. By combining traditional designs with contemporary elements, they make the craft accessible and visually appealing. Visitors at Banan can see live demonstrations of weaving techniques, interact with the artisans, and even try their hand at creating small pieces. This hands-on approach helps people understand the effort and skill involved in Sadu weaving, making the experience both educational and memorable.
Al-Zouman and his wife have introduced modern materials into their work while preserving traditional motifs. They use lightweight and sustainable materials such as cotton, nylon, and wire. These materials make the woven items more durable and versatile without compromising the authenticity of the patterns. By using sustainable materials, the artisans also highlight the importance of eco-friendly practices in traditional crafts.
While their work respects traditional Sadu weaving techniques, the couple also experiments with new styles and designs. This modern interpretation allows the craft to evolve with the times, attracting younger generations and international audiences who may not be familiar with Saudi culture. Their approach demonstrates that traditional arts can thrive in a contemporary context without losing their cultural significance.
The presence of Al-Zouman at Banan enriches the festival, which celebrates the diversity and richness of Saudi handicrafts. His work provides a bridge between the past and the present, offering visitors a glimpse into the country’s heritage while inspiring interest in traditional arts. By combining skill, creativity, and sustainability, Abdulaziz Al-Zouman is ensuring that Sadu weaving continues to thrive and gain appreciation both in Saudi Arabia and beyond.
