Russian Strikes Kill 24 in Ukraine, Including Children's Hospital Targeted

A children's hospital in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, has suffered severe damage as a result of Russian airstrikes that killed at least 24 people across the country, according to officials.

In Kyiv, a rare daytime attack claimed at least 10 lives, including casualties from the devastating blast at the Ohmatdyt Children's Hospital. Vitaliy Klitschko, Kyiv's mayor, described the bombardment as one of the worst attacks on the city since the war began, confirming fatalities at the hospital while clarifying exact figures.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, currently in Poland to finalize a security pact, condemned Russia's actions and called for consequences. He highlighted the extensive damage caused by over 40 missiles in various cities including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk, where residential buildings, infrastructure, and the hospital were hit.

Witnesses shared videos showing plumes of smoke over Kyiv and scenes of destruction inside and outside the hospital. Zelensky mentioned people trapped under the hospital rubble, emphasizing the urgent rescue efforts involving medical staff and volunteers.

Health Minister Viktor Lyashko reported damage to critical wards like cancer and intensive care, with distressing images showing evacuated children with IV drips outside the hospital.

Elsewhere, Oleksandr Vilkul, head of Kryvyi Rih's military administration, reported 10 fatalities and 31 injuries from the attacks in the president's hometown. In Dnipro, regional head Sergiy Lysak confirmed one fatality and six injuries, noting damage to a high-rise and a business establishment.

The assault on Pokrovsk in Donetsk resulted in three deaths amid recent Russian advances in the region. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Moscow for a scheduled meeting with President Vladimir Putin, coinciding with the attacks.

Russia has yet to comment on the airstrikes, maintaining its military's non-targeting stance on civilian infrastructure despite mounting civilian casualties. The UN's human rights mission in Ukraine has documented an increase in civilian deaths due to renewed Russian air campaigns, marking May as the deadliest month in nearly a year.

Zelensky continues to appeal to Western allies for increased air defense support amid ongoing hostilities.
