In a distressing turn of events, over one million people in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region are now without heating and water due to severe Russian airstrikes targeting essential energy infrastructure, as confirmed by a Ukrainian official on Thursday. This escalation comes amid frigid temperatures, raising alarms about the safety and well-being of vulnerable civilians.
This winter, Russian forces have notably heightened their attacks on Ukraine's energy sectors, continuing a disturbing trend where critical facilities are deliberately bombed to disrupt vital heating and water services. Kyiv and its global partners have condemned these aggressive actions as calculated moves to undermine the civilian population by inflicting severe living conditions during the winter months.
Beyond Dnipropetrovsk, the Zaporizhzhia region also faced significant power outages following a major drone assault by Russian teams. According to Ukrenergo, the state operator for Ukraine's electricity grid, this attack left thousands of households without power and heating late on Wednesday night.
Ukraine's Minister for Restoration, Oleksiy Kuleba, stated that efforts to repair the damage and restore heating and water are underway, highlighting the urgent need for relief to the over one million citizens affected by the outages.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia deployed 97 drones in the attack, with 70 intercepted successfully by Ukraine's air defenses. Nevertheless, 27 drones managed to hit various targets, severely damaging essential infrastructure.
Vladyslav Gaivanenko, the military head of the Dnipropetrovsk region, characterized the scenario as “difficult” but assured that restoration work would commence once it is deemed safe. In Zaporizhzhia, officials reported that while power has been partially restored in vital facilities, a considerable number of residents still lack electricity, as noted by Governor Ivan Fedorov.
In retaliation to ongoing attacks on its energy infrastructure, Kyiv has launched strikes against Russian oil depots and refineries, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s energy exports and create fuel shortages that could impair Russian military operations.
The relentless bombardment of energy infrastructures not only worsens the humanitarian crisis amid winter's harshness but also highlights the intensifying conflict and its dire ramifications for civilian life throughout Ukraine.
