Russia unleashed a wave of missile attacks on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, on Monday. These strikes damaged vital energy infrastructure and left at least one civilian injured, according to local reports.

Officials confirmed that five missiles hit various locations in Kharkiv, targeting facilities essential for heating, electricity, and water supply. The strikes coincided with freezing temperatures, worsening the already dire situation for residents facing prolonged power outages.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated that the assaults were aimed at crippling civilian life rather than striking military targets. He emphasized that disrupting essential services was intended to instill fear and cast the city into darkness this winter.

In another incident, Russian forces targeted a Dnipro-based industrial plant owned by the US agricultural firm Bunge. The attack resulted in a significant spill of approximately 300 metric tons of sunflower oil following damage to storage facilities.

Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov reported that cleanup crews are currently using sand and gravel to contain the oil spill. He cautioned that a crucial road along the river would remain closed for two to three days to facilitate the cleanup efforts.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strike on the US-owned facility as intentional, noting that Russian forces had made multiple attempts to target the site, highlighting a pattern of aggression against American businesses in Ukraine.

Sybiha further stated that these attacks reflect Russia's blatant disregard for ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the United States aimed at resolving nearly four years of conflict.

Bunge reassured that no employees were harmed and the company is actively working with local authorities to assess damage, mitigate environmental impact, and resume normal operations.

Kharkiv, located near the Russian border and home to over a million residents, has been subjected to repeated violence in recent months. Power providers reported that residents had limited access to electricity even prior to these latest assaults.

Following November, Russia has markedly escalated its attacks on Ukraine’s energy and logistical infrastructures. In late December, heavy strikes left large areas of Kyiv without heating, while Odesa faced extensive power outages for several days. Heating facilities in both the Chernihiv region and Kherson city have also been targeted.
