In a strong denunciation, Russia has criticized the disclosure of a confidential phone call between Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Vladimir Putin’s top foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, branding it an “unacceptable” action that jeopardizes ongoing peace negotiations over the Ukraine situation. The leaked transcript, which was made public by Bloomberg News, has stoked tensions and ignited inquiries into the source of the breach.
The controversial call took place on October 14, during which Witkoff is reported to have offered the Russian side recommendations regarding a potential peace plan for Ukraine intended for Trump. Bloomberg has stated that it reviewed the audio but did not clarify how such sensitive information was accessed.
Ushakov expressed strong disapproval, asserting that the conversation was never meant for public dissemination. He specifically told Russian media that the leak was designed to sabotage U.S.-Russia discussions aimed at concluding the conflict in Ukraine. “This is unacceptable,” he remarked, indicating that the leak was a deliberate move to undermine diplomatic actions.
Moreover, Ushakov disclosed that certain dialogues with Witkoff were conducted via secure government channels, which are seldom intercepted unless a deliberate intention to release them exists. Nevertheless, he maintained that none of those involved in the call were the leak's culprits. Ushakov stated he would directly address the matter with Witkoff. He further hinted that conversations on platforms like WhatsApp are more vulnerable to interception, suggesting that the breach could have exploited less secure communication methods.
A separate leaked transcript indicated an October 29 dialogue between Ushakov and Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund and a senior envoy for Putin. Dmitriev described Bloomberg’s reporting as “fake” and dismissed the authenticity of the leaked conversation.
The controversy deepened with comments from Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who stated that certain media outlets were being manipulated by European governments in a broader “hybrid information war” against Russia. He asserted that the intention was to weaken Moscow’s ties with Washington and disrupt dialogue surrounding Ukraine.
Bloomberg has yet to address Russia’s allegations or clarify how it gained access to recordings involving senior officials from two major world powers. Such leaks are infrequent, typically surrounding intricate surveillance or deliberate insider actions.
This situation has raised significant concerns regarding the security of international diplomatic communications and has added further strain to sensitive peace negotiations in Ukraine, where both Russia and the United States endeavor to find a resolution after years of conflict.
Moscow’s stance is clear: the leak is perceived as not merely an infringement of privacy but as a strategic maneuver intended to erode trust, sow confusion, and disrupt international diplomacy.
