RTA Expands Traffic Capacity with Rapid Enhancement on Sheikh Zayed Road

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully finished major traffic improvements on Sheikh Zayed Road. The goal of these upgrades is to make driving smoother, reduce traffic jams, and increase the road’s capacity. These changes are part of the RTA’s continuous efforts to keep up with Dubai’s rapid growth by using smart traffic solutions, while also ensuring safety for all road users.

Sheikh Zayed Road is one of the most important roads in Dubai. It connects key business areas and passes by famous landmarks such as the Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai Mall. The road also serves major companies, banks, hotels, and entertainment spots, making it a vital route for both daily commuters and businesses.

Key Enhancements to Boost Traffic Flow
Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said that the recent upgrades aim to improve travel times and make the road safer and more efficient.

One of the main improvements was the expansion of the service road next to Financial Centre Metro Station in the direction towards Abu Dhabi. The number of lanes on this service road was increased from three to four. This upgrade has raised the road’s capacity by 25%, allowing it to handle 3,200 vehicles per hour, compared to the previous 2,400 vehicles.

As a result, the heavy traffic and vehicle queues at the entrance have been cleared. The travel time along this section has also been reduced significantly—from five minutes to just two minutes.

Better Merging Lanes Reduce Congestion
The RTA also worked on enhancing the merging area between Al Khail Road and Financial Centre Street in the direction towards Dubai. By making the merging lane longer, the traffic flow has become smoother. This upgrade has led to a 25% drop in travel time along Sheikh Zayed Road in this direction, cutting the journey from four minutes to just three.

Al Khzaimy highlighted that these upgrades will offer motorists a more comfortable and faster travel experience. The RTA plans to continue making similar improvements across Dubai to keep pace with the city’s ongoing growth and provide safe, efficient, and reliable road networks.
