Award-winning British rapper Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has appeared in court charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal crash in north-east London.
The incident took place on 18 October on Redbridge Lane in Ilford, where Clarke-Samuel’s BMW reportedly struck 20-year-old Yubin Tamang. The musician allegedly failed to stop at the scene.
Clarke-Samuel, from Woodford, east London, was initially charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, but the charge was upgraded after Mr Tamang died from his injuries.
Appearing at Barkingside Magistrates' Court wearing a grey prison-issue tracksuit, Clarke-Samuel spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address before being remanded in custody.
The court heard that Mr Tamang was an only child whose parents had sent him to the UK to pursue an education.
Clarke-Samuel is due to appear at the Old Bailey on 24 November.
Ghetts is a Mercury Prize-nominated grime MC, rapper, and songwriter, known for his collaborations with Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, and Skepta. He won Best Male Act at the Mobo Awards in 2021 and received the Mobo Pioneer Award in 2024 for his “significant contribution to British black culture.”
