Rama Duwaji, the 28-year-old wife of New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, has made history as the first Gen Z First Lady of the city. Known for her quiet yet pivotal role in Mamdani’s campaign, Duwaji has been credited with shaping his digital identity, designing campaign materials, and significantly boosting his social media presence. Despite her behind-the-scenes influence, she has largely stayed out of the public spotlight, rarely appearing in media interviews or magazine profiles alongside her husband.
Duwaji, a Syrian-American artist and illustrator, relocated to the United States in 2021. She met Mamdani through the dating app Hinge, and the couple became engaged in October 2024. Later that year, they celebrated a private nikah and engagement ceremony on a rooftop in Dubai, followed by a courthouse wedding in New York earlier this year.
Professionally, Duwaji holds a Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her artwork explores themes of sisterhood, Arab identity, political resistance, and communal experiences. Many of her illustrations highlight pro-Palestinian messages, including depictions of violence and U.S. involvement.
Based in Brooklyn, Duwaji also creates hand-illustrated ceramics, particularly blue-and-white plates. She maintains a strong digital presence, with nearly 235,000 followers on Instagram, where she shares her artwork, political commentary, and personal milestones, including glimpses of her partnership with Mamdani.
While Zohran Mamdani’s historic victory as New York City’s first Muslim mayor has drawn global attention, Duwaji’s role as both a supportive partner and creative strategist has been instrumental in shaping his public image and campaign success. With this election, she has become the first Gen Z individual to step into the role of New York’s First Lady, marking a generational shift in the city’s leadership and the growing influence of young creatives in politics.
