Psyllium husk, commonly known as isabgol, has been a trusted natural remedy in many households for years. It is made from the husks of Plantago ovata seeds and is known as a natural form of soluble fiber. Many people use it to improve digestion, ease constipation and maintain regular bowel movements. Modern research now supports many of these traditional beliefs and highlights more benefits of psyllium for heart health and blood sugar management.

Psyllium works as a bulk-forming laxative. When mixed with water and consumed, it absorbs liquid inside the stomach and gut. This helps increase the size and softness of stool, making it easier to pass. Because of this action, psyllium can relieve constipation and may also prevent related problems such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures. Many doctors and health experts recommend it as a gentle and natural option for people who want relief from irregular bowel movements without strong chemical medicines.

Health reports also point out that psyllium may support heart health by lowering cholesterol levels. Research shared in a 2017 review found that consuming six to fifteen grams of psyllium fiber each day helped reduce LDL or “bad” cholesterol by up to 24 percent and total cholesterol by up to 20 percent. Lower cholesterol is important because high cholesterol increases the risk of many serious diseases. According to the American Heart Association, high cholesterol can raise the chances of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stroke and even heart attacks. For this reason, adding natural fiber into everyday meals may help people protect their heart health in a simple way.

Some studies also suggest that psyllium may help in keeping blood sugar levels stable. Soluble fiber slows down the digestion of food, which can prevent sudden spikes in blood sugar after meals. Although early studies show positive results, the United States Food and Drug Administration has noted that more scientific research is needed before psyllium can be officially recommended for diabetes treatment. Still, many people find that adding fiber to their diet supports better digestion and helps them feel full for longer.

Psyllium husk is available over the counter in many forms and is easy to use. A teaspoon mixed with warm water or milk is a common traditional method. Experts advise drinking enough water while taking psyllium because fiber absorbs liquid and works best when the body stays hydrated. People with existing medical conditions should consult a doctor before starting any new supplement, even if it is natural.

Overall, psyllium husk remains a simple, affordable and widely trusted supplement that offers several possible health benefits. From smoother digestion and lower cholesterol to better blood sugar control, it continues to prove its importance in everyday healthcare.
