But if you use too much, or mix them in the wrong way, they can hurt your skin. You may get red spots, feel burning, or even get blisters.

Doctors are seeing more people coming to them with peeling skin, rashes, or pain after using serums—even when they follow the directions. Many of these people saw beauty tips on TikTok or Instagram and thought it was safe.

Everyone’s skin is different

A big problem is that not all skin is the same. Just because a serum works for someone online doesn’t mean it will work for you. If you have sensitive skin or skin problems like eczema, you might get a bad reaction.

Using too many strong serums together can damage your skin. Your skin may get dry, red, or break out. Sometimes, it takes weeks or months for skin to feel better again.

If you use serums or want to try one, here are some simple tips to stay safe:

  • Always test the serum on a small part of your skin first.

  • Don’t mix strong serums like retinol and acids together.

  • Choose products that match your skin type—like dry, oily, or sensitive.

  • If your skin hurts or burns, stop using it right away.

  • Buy from trusted brands and stores.

Are natural serums better?

Some people think that natural or plant-based products are always safe. But that’s not true. Things like lemon juice or tea tree oil can also harm your skin if used the wrong way.

Even natural products can cause allergies or burning. So always read what’s inside and do your research. Just because it says "organic" or "clean" doesn’t mean it’s safe for your skin.

Picking the right serum

The best serum is the one that fits your skin’s needs. If you have pimples, try one with salicylic acid or niacinamide. If your skin is dry, look for hyaluronic acid. For dark spots, vitamin C may help. But always start slow. Try small amounts first and see how your skin reacts.
