Philippine Coast Guard Reports China Anchors 'Monster Ship' in South China Sea

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) disclosed on Saturday that China's largest coastguard vessel has anchored within Manila's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea, a move perceived as intimidation towards its smaller Asian neighbor. According to PCG spokesperson Jay Tarriela, the Chinese coastguard's 165-meter 'monster ship' entered the Philippine EEZ on July 2, prompting concerns and diplomatic queries.

"We informed the Chinese vessel that it was within Philippine jurisdiction and inquired about their intentions," Tarriela stated during a news forum. He emphasized that the presence of the Chinese vessel, accompanied by a smaller boat, was viewed as provocative and intimidating.

"It's an intimidation on the part of the China Coast Guard," Tarriela remarked defiantly. "We're not backing down, and we will not be intimidated."

As of the latest reports, neither the Chinese embassy in Manila nor the Chinese foreign ministry has responded to requests for comment on the matter. Contact information for China's coast guard remains inaccessible to the public.

Tarriela further detailed that the Chinese vessel was anchored approximately 800 yards away from a PCG vessel stationed in the area. The Philippine Coast Guard has been actively monitoring such activities, including deploying ships to locations like the Sabina shoal to deter alleged small-scale reclamation efforts by China, which Beijing denies.

China's extensive land reclamation projects in the South China Sea, involving the construction of military installations on disputed islands, have raised international concerns, particularly in Washington and among regional stakeholders. Beijing asserts sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, disregarding the 2016 ruling by The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration, which invalidated its expansive maritime claims.

In a recent development, the Philippines and China engaged in high-level dialogue, resulting in an agreement on Tuesday to focus on "restoring trust" and "rebuilding confidence" to manage maritime disputes more effectively. Despite tensions and offers from its treaty ally, the United States, to assist in South China Sea operations, the Philippines has opted to handle these matters independently, including issues related to resupply missions to Filipino troops stationed on contested shoals.
