Palestinians Flee Khan Younis Amid Israeli Strikes in Southern Gaza

Palestinians in the eastern districts of Gaza's Khan Younis are fleeing following evacuation orders issued by Israel, amidst intensified airstrikes overnight and into the morning. Witnesses reported multiple Israeli strikes in and around Khan Younis, resulting in eight deaths and over 30 injuries according to medical sources and the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Patients and medical staff have been evacuating from the European Gaza hospital as directed by Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry, although Israel has not issued evacuation orders for the hospital itself. The Red Cross has been aiding in transferring patients to other medical facilities.

Louise Wateridge of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) expressed concern over the plight of displaced residents, many of whom had already endured previous conflicts in the area. She highlighted the severe conditions faced by those forced to live in damaged and unsafe buildings following previous military operations.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded to the situation, citing around 20 projectiles launched from Khan Younis towards Israel on Monday. In retaliation, the IDF targeted several terror sites including weapons storage facilities and operational centers, accusing Hamas of using civilian infrastructure and populations as shields, thus violating international law.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the projectile launch, the largest such attack from Gaza into Israel in recent months. Khan Younis, previously heavily damaged during earlier conflicts with Hamas, has seen partial reconstruction, prompting some residents to return despite the risks.

Now, amid renewed fears of a major Israeli offensive, many residents are once again forced to flee, seeking refuge in safer areas.
